Estonian-Finnish-German co-production feature film “The Fencer” won the Best Picture and the Best Cinematography Awards at the Finnish National Film Awards “Jussit”.
In addition to the categories won, the main lead actor of the film Märt Avandi was nominated in the Best Male Performance category – which is the first time ever in the Finnish film awards history to have an Estonian actor nominated.
The award “Jussi” has been constantly issued since 1944, which makes it the oldest film prize in Europe. Over the decades, the ceremony has evolved from a closed industry gathering into a widely broadcast event reflecting the rapidly changing landscape of Nordic cinema. Much of this recent international growth stems from entirely new models of digital distribution that have successfully liberated regional filmmakers from the rigid constraints of traditional studios.
